Discover more about Citadel Ruins

Perched atop a hill in Victoria, Gozo, the Citadel (Ċittadella) stands as a testament to the island's layered past. Inhabited since Neolithic times, it served as a sanctuary and defensive stronghold, witnessing Phoenician, Roman, and Medieval development. The Citadel's strategic importance grew as it became the nucleus of a Roman Municipality, independent from Malta, with a temple dedicated to the goddess Juno. During the Middle Ages, the acropolis transformed into a castle, offering refuge to Gozo's population. Until 1637, Gozitans were required to spend their nights within its walls for safety. The Citadel faced numerous threats, including a devastating Ottoman raid in 1551, where the population was taken into slavery. Rebuilt between 1599 and 1622 by the Knights of St. John, the Citadel became a gunpowder fortress, though some criticized the new fortifications. Today, the Citadel is mostly uninhabited and offers visitors a captivating glimpse into Gozo's history. Explore the bastions and walk along the fortified walls for panoramic views of the entire island. Discover architectural gems like the Cathedral of the Assumption, designed by Lorenzo Gafà in Baroque style, and museums such as the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, the Gran Castello Historic House, and the Old Prison. The Citadel also hosts the Citadel Visitors' Centre, housed in old water reservoirs, with interactive exhibits and a video showcasing the Citadel's history.
