  • Public Transport

    From the main bus terminus in St. Paul's Bay, take any bus that stops at 'Mistra'. Bus routes that serve St Paul's Bay include 41, 42, 48, 49, 203, 221, 222, 223, 225, and others. Alight at the 'Mistra' bus stop on Triq il-Mistra. From there, walk approximately 500 meters northeast along Triq il-Mistra until you reach Mistra Gate. Single bus tickets cost €2.50 in summer and €2.00 in winter.

  • Walking

    From the St. Paul's Bay waterfront, head inland towards Triq il-Mistra. Follow Triq il-Mistra for approximately 1.5 km. Mistra Gate will be located on your left, set back from the road. The walk is mostly flat and should take around 20-25 minutes.

  • Car

    From the center of St. Paul's Bay, head southeast on Triq San Pawl towards Triq il-Mistra. Continue straight on Triq il-Mistra for about 1.5 km. Mistra Gate will be on your left at address X93M+756. Note that there is no dedicated parking at Mistra Gate, so parking is on nearby streets. Parking availability can be limited, especially during peak season. Check for white lines indicating legal parking spaces. Parking fees may apply in some areas.

Mistra Gate, or Bieb tal-Mistra in Maltese, is an impressive gateway located in St. Paul's Bay, Malta. Constructed in 1760, the gate served as the main entrance to an estate owned by the Monte della Redenzione degli Schiavi, an institution founded in 1607 to raise money for the ransom of Christian slaves in Muslim lands. The estate was bequeathed to the Monte di Redenzione by noblewoman Caterina Vitale in 1619.The gate itself is a fine example of Baroque architecture, adorned with the coats of arms of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, the Monte di Redenzione, and Balì Claudius de Montagne de Lafeuliere and Balì Carlo Maria Olgiati. A nearby farmhouse was also part of the estate. The funds of the Monte di Redenzione were transferred to the state in 1798 during the French occupation of Malta, and the land became government property.The gate has undergone several restorations, including a complete rebuilding in 1937 and a dismantling and rebuilding in the 1990s, completed in 1998. Today, Mistra Gate is a Grade 1 national monument, offering visitors a glimpse into Malta's history and architectural heritage. The surrounding area provides a picturesque backdrop for leisurely walks and photography.
