Mistra Gate, or Bieb tal-Mistra in Maltese, is an impressive gateway located in St. Paul's Bay, Malta. Constructed in 1760, the gate served as the main entrance to an estate owned by the Monte della Redenzione degli Schiavi, an institution founded in 1607 to raise money for the ransom of Christian slaves in Muslim lands. The estate was bequeathed to the Monte di Redenzione by noblewoman Caterina Vitale in 1619.The gate itself is a fine example of Baroque architecture, adorned with the coats of arms of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, the Monte di Redenzione, and Balì Claudius de Montagne de Lafeuliere and Balì Carlo Maria Olgiati. A nearby farmhouse was also part of the estate. The funds of the Monte di Redenzione were transferred to the state in 1798 during the French occupation of Malta, and the land became government property. The gate has undergone several restorations, including a complete rebuilding in 1937 and a dismantling and rebuilding in the 1990s, completed in 1998. Today, Mistra Gate is a Grade 1 national monument, offering visitors a glimpse into Malta's history and architectural heritage. The surrounding area provides a picturesque backdrop for leisurely walks and photography.
