Discover more about Ninu's Cave

Ninu's Cave, or Għar Ninu in Maltese, offers a fascinating glimpse into the subterranean world beneath the island of Gozo. Discovered in 1888 by Joseph Rapa while digging a well, this hidden gem is located in the village of Xagħra and remains under the private ownership of the Rapa family. The cave itself is relatively small, consisting of a single chamber adorned with a variety of natural speleothems. Visitors descend via a narrow, four-meter spiral staircase into a chamber approximately 20 meters by 8 meters. Electric lighting illuminates the interior, showcasing the intricate stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millennia. While some formations are now dry and share the color of the surrounding limestone, others retain a semi-transparent quality, revealing the rings that mark their slow growth. Though some soda straw stalactites have been broken off over time, the cave still boasts a few rare helictites, adding to its unique appeal. The experience is made even more special by the personal touch of the owner, the great-granddaughter of Joseph Rapa, who often provides guided tours and shares the history of the cave. The family also maintains a nativity crib within the home, adding a cultural layer to the visit.
