Discover more about The Red Tower

St. Agatha's Tower, more commonly known as the Red Tower, is a commanding historical landmark located in Mellieħa, Malta. Constructed between 1647 and 1649 during the reign of Grand Master Jean Paul Lascaris Castellar, it was the sixth of the Lascaris towers and the last large bastioned tower built on the island. Designed by architect Antonio Garsin, the tower's primary function was to serve as a watchtower and communication link between Valletta and Gozo, forming part of a network of fortifications along the Maltese coast. The tower's design is unique, featuring a square structure with four corner turrets, a departure from the other Lascaris towers but similar to earlier Wignacourt towers. Its strategic location on the Marfa Ridge provided clear views of Mellieħa Bay, Comino, and Gozo, allowing for early detection of approaching enemy ships. The thick walls, measuring approximately four meters at the base, and the presence of cannon ports ensured a strong defensive position. The tower could house a garrison of up to 50 men and store enough supplies to withstand a 40-day siege. Over the centuries, the Red Tower played a significant role in Malta's military history, serving as a defense post during the British period and both World Wars. Today, it is managed by Din l-Art Ħelwa, a non-governmental organization that has undertaken extensive restoration work to preserve the tower's structure and historical integrity. Visitors can explore the tower's interior, admire the panoramic views from the roof, and learn about its history through informative displays. The Red Tower stands as a reminder of Malta's strategic importance and the architectural legacy of the Knights of St. John.
