Discover more about Victoria Lines

The Victoria Lines, often referred to as the Great Wall of Malta, represent a unique monument of military architecture. Constructed by the British between 1870 and 1899, the lines span 12 kilometers across the island, utilizing the natural escarpment known as the Great Fault. This strategic location provided a natural defensive barrier against potential invasions from the north, aimed at the vital Grand Harbour. The Victoria Lines consist of a network of fortifications, including forts, batteries, entrenchments, and connecting infantry lines. Forts like Madliena, Mosta, and Bingemma served as strongpoints, while the infantry walls provided a continuous defensive barrier. The lines were intended to prevent enemy forces from reaching the island's southern harbors and naval facilities. Despite their strategic importance, the Victoria Lines were never tested in battle and were considered obsolete by the start of World War I. Over time, sections of the lines have crumbled into ruins, with some parts affected by graffiti and neglect. However, many stretches remain intact, offering visitors a chance to explore this historical landmark and enjoy the scenic views. Walking along the lines provides a peaceful escape and a unique perspective on Malta's landscape. Today, the Victoria Lines are a popular destination for hikers, nature lovers, and history enthusiasts. The walking trail offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, including the northern coast and the island of Gozo. Exploring the forts, batteries, and the remains of the infantry wall provides a glimpse into Malta's military past.
