Discover more about Ggantija Temples Entrance

The Ġgantija Temples, located on the island of Gozo, are a testament to the ingenuity of Neolithic builders. Erected between 3600 and 3200 BC, these temples are among the oldest surviving man-made religious structures, predating even the pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge. The name 'Ġgantija,' meaning 'place of giants' in Maltese, stems from the local belief that giants constructed the temples. The complex consists of two temples, the South Temple and the North Temple, enclosed by a massive boundary wall. The Southern Temple, the older and better-preserved of the two, features five large apses. Inside, archaeologists have discovered animal bones and other artifacts, suggesting the site was used for religious rituals, possibly involving animal sacrifices. The temples were constructed using large limestone blocks, some weighing over 50 tons, transported using ball bearings. Visitors begin their exploration at the Interpretation Centre, which provides insights into Neolithic life and displays significant artifacts found at various prehistoric sites in Gozo. An outdoor pathway connects the center to the temples. The site sits on the Xagħra plateau, offering panoramic views. Nearby attractions include Ninu's Cave and Xerri's Grotto, adding to the allure of the visit.
