The Gozo Nature Museum, formerly known as the Natural Science Museum, offers a captivating exploration of Gozo's natural history. Located in the heart of Victoria within the Cittadella, the museum is housed in a cluster of three interconnected domestic buildings dating back to the 17th century. These buildings have their own stories to tell, having served as an inn in the 18th century and as a shelter for families during World War II. The museum's collection is spread across two floors. The ground floor focuses on geology, minerals, marine life, and human and animal evolution. Visitors can examine fossils dating back millions of years, a diverse mineral collection donated by Dr. Lewis Mizzi, and displays of local marine life. A highlight is the display of moonstone fragments brought back from the Apollo 11 mission, accompanied by a small Maltese flag. The upper floor is dedicated to the ecosystems of the Maltese Islands, with a focus on Gozo. Exhibits include insects, plants, and a model of the Dwejra area. The Maltese Rock Centaury, Malta's national plant, is also featured. A small garden behind the museum showcases indigenous plants. The museum provides an educational experience for visitors of all ages, highlighting the importance of conservation and the delicate balance of nature.
