Getting There

• Car

  If you are already in the Mississippi River area, navigate to Bemidji, MN 56601. From downtown Bemidji, take US-2 W for about 5 miles. Merge onto MN-371 S and continue for approximately 15 miles. Then, take a right onto County Road 29, which leads directly to the Mississippi Headwaters State Forest. Keep an eye out for signage indicating the forest entrance. There are no tolls on this route, and parking is available at the forest entrance.

  To reach Mississippi Headwaters State Forest using public transportation, start by taking a Greyhound bus to Bemidji, MN. Once you arrive at the Bemidji bus station, you will need to arrange for a taxi or ride-sharing service to take you to the forest, as public transit options directly to the forest are limited. The taxi ride will take about 30 minutes and may cost around $30-$50, depending on the service and time of day.

  For the adventurous, consider cycling from Bemidji to Mississippi Headwaters State Forest. From downtown Bemidji, head west on Paul Bunyan Dr NW, then take a left onto US-2 W. You will cycle approximately 5 miles before merging onto MN-371 S. This route is about 15 miles long and takes you through scenic landscapes. Be sure to wear a helmet and bring water, as there are limited stops along the way.
