Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the center of Park Rapids, MN. Head east on MN-34 E for about 2 miles. Turn right onto Wilderness Dr. Continue on Wilderness Dr for approximately 5 miles. The Itasca Wilderness Sanctuary Scientific and Natural Area (SNA) will be on your right. There is no entrance fee required, but make sure to have a valid parking pass if required. The sanctuary is open 24/7, but visiting during daylight hours is recommended for safety.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options are limited in this rural area. However, you can take a bus from Park Rapids to the nearest major transport hub. Check local schedules for the nearest bus stop. Once in Park Rapids, you can use a taxi or rideshare service to reach Wilderness Dr. Confirm the exact fare with the driver as it may vary based on distance.

• Bicycle

  If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike in Park Rapids. Follow the same route as if you were driving: head east on MN-34 E, then turn right onto Wilderness Dr. The distance is about 7 miles one way. Ensure you wear a helmet and follow all traffic laws. There are no specific bike racks at the sanctuary, but you can lock your bike to nearby trees or posts.

• Walking

  Walking to the sanctuary from Park Rapids is not recommended due to the distance, which is about 7 miles. If you choose to walk, head east on MN-34 E, then turn right onto Wilderness Dr. Be cautious of traffic as there are no sidewalks along the highway. This option is only advisable for those in good physical condition and who are well-prepared with water and snacks.
