Discover more about Eudora Welty House & Garden

The Eudora Welty House & Garden, located in Jackson's Belhaven neighborhood, offers a captivating journey into the life and creative world of the acclaimed author. Welty resided here for nearly 80 years, from 1925 until her death in 2001, and the house is now a National Historic Landmark. The house itself, a Tudor Revival built in 1925, is one of the most well-preserved literary residences in the country. A guided tour takes you through the rooms where Welty lived and wrote, showcasing her personal belongings, including her vast collection of books, her typewriter, and cherished gifts from fellow authors. The home is maintained as it was in 1986 when Welty gifted it to the state of Mississippi, providing an intimate glimpse into her life. The garden, designed by Welty's mother, Chestina, in 1925, was a labor of love for both women. It features a variety of flora, including a rose garden, a woodland garden, and over 40 varieties of camellias that bloom throughout the winter. Welty found inspiration in her garden, with over 150 plant species appearing in her stories. The garden is recognized as an official stop on the American Camellia Society Gulf Coast Camellia Trail and a display garden for the American Daffodil Society. Visitors can explore the Education and Visitors Center next door, which features exhibits on Welty's photography, literary awards, and a permanent exhibit inspired by her memoir, *One Writer's Beginnings*. The center also offers a gift shop.
