St. Louis' Old Post Office, located at 815 Olive Street, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural grandeur. Completed in 1884, this imposing structure is a prime example of Second Empire architecture, a style that aimed to project solidity and security in the wake of the Civil War. Designed by Alfred B. Mullett, the building served as the main conduit for commerce and correspondence to and from all points west. The building's design is inspired by Napoleon III's modernization of Paris, featuring a fortress-like exterior with a 28-foot deep moat and sliding iron shutters. These precautions were initially implemented to protect a subtreasury branch housed within and to guard against potential mob violence. Constructed of Red Missouri granite and gray Maine granite, the Old Post Office is one of only two surviving Mullett buildings in this style, the other being the Old Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C.. Inside, visitors can admire the elaborate detailing, including ornamental plaster cornices and medallions, art glass windows, and bronze doorknobs displaying the Seal of the United States. The building also features innovative systems for heating, ventilation, and natural light. The Old Post Office has been used by both private and government entities and has also served as a venue for events. Today, the Old Post Office stands as a beautifully preserved landmark, offering a glimpse into St. Louis' vibrant past.
