Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, also known as White Haven, is a 9.65-acre National Historic Site located in Grantwood Village, Missouri, about 10 miles southwest of downtown St. Louis. The site preserves five historic structures from what was once an 850-acre plantation in the mid-1800s. Visitors can explore the meticulously restored White Haven home, which dates back to 1812, and its surrounding outbuildings, including a stone summer kitchen, icehouse, and chicken house. The on-site visitor center, housed in a historic barn, features exhibits about the Grants and White Haven, an information desk, a library, public restrooms, and a shop. White Haven was the childhood home of Julia Dent Grant, Ulysses' wife, and the residence of Ulysses S. Grant from 1854 to 1859. During this time, Grant managed the plantation with enslaved labor. The site acknowledges this history, providing context for understanding Grant's later role as a Union general and President.
