Discover more about John F. Kennedy Memorial Forest

The John F. Kennedy Memorial Forest, a serene natural area within St. Louis's Forest Park, provides a peaceful escape and a glimpse into the region's original landscape. Dedicated in 1964 as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, the forest stands as the first area in Forest Park designated for environmental conservation. Before European settlement, the area was primarily timberland. However, with the expansion of St. Louis and the development of Forest Park in 1876, much of the original tree cover was cleared. The southwest corner, though spared, suffered neglect and became a dumping ground. By the time it was dedicated to Kennedy, the forest was in poor condition, further degraded by invasive species. In the 1990s, restoration efforts began to revitalize the forest. The Missouri Department of Conservation and the Kennedy Woods Advisory Group worked to remove invasive plants and thin the tree cover to promote the growth of native oak and hickory saplings. More recently, the City of St. Louis and volunteers have continued this ecological restoration, reintroducing native trees and understory plants to encourage the return of local animal species. Today, the Kennedy Forest features three distinct habitats: an urban park area with mown grass and picnic spots, a mature timberland, and a restored oak savanna. Visitors can explore the forest via 3.5 miles of paved and gravel trails, including the ADA-accessible John F. Kennedy Trail, also known as the Boardwalk. The forest is a popular destination for runners, bikers, hikers, and birdwatchers. The National Audubon Society has designated it as an Important Bird Area, thanks to the over 100 species of migratory birds that stop there.
