Discover more about Old Orhei Fort

Old Orhei, also known as Orheiul Vechi, is a captivating Moldovan historical and archaeological complex located approximately 60 kilometers northeast of Chișinău, nestled along the Răut River. This open-air museum is a unique synthesis of natural landscape and historical vestiges, attracting over 150,000 tourists annually. The area has been inhabited since ancient times, with archaeological excavations revealing cultural layers from the Paleolithic, Eneolithic, and Iron Ages. The Geto-Dacians erected a ring fort here between the 3rd century BC and the 1st century AD to control this strategic area. The complex also bears traces of the Golden Horde, who built the town of Yangi-Shehr in the 14th century, and a Moldavian fort dating from the 14th-16th centuries. One of Old Orhei's most striking features is its cave monasteries, carved into the limestone cliffs. These caves provided isolation for early Christian communities. The Orthodox monastery is still inhabited by monks who maintain the church at the top of the hill, and the caves continue to function as chapels, containing historical artifacts and Old Church Slavonic inscriptions. Visitors can explore the Cave Monastery, which includes a church, monastic cells, a bell tower, and a stone cross. The landscape itself is remarkable, with the Răut River carving through limestone rock formations. The Butuceni promontory, with its calcareous slates and caves, harmonizes with the Pestere promontory, creating a unique and scenic complex. Visiting Old Orhei offers a chance to step back in time and explore the diverse layers of history and culture that have shaped this region of Moldova.
