History of Whitefish Mountain Resort

Before it became a renowned ski resort, the area that is now Whitefish Mountain Resort was inhabited by the Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreille tribes. These tribes utilized the land for hunting, fishing, and gathering, and their presence is still honored in the region today. The rich cultural history of these tribes is interwoven with the natural landscape, providing a deep sense of place and history.
The development of Whitefish as a community began with the arrival of the Great Northern Railway in 1904.
