Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the nearest major city center in the Ayeyarwady Region, such as Pathein. From Pathein, take the Nyaungdon Road heading north towards the town of Nyaung U. Once you reach Nyaung U, follow the signs to Old Bagan. The Tharabar Gate is located at the entrance to the ancient city of Bagan. Ensure you have a GPS or maps app for precise navigation. Parking is available near the gate.

• Public Transportation (Bus)

  To reach Tharabar Gate by bus, take a coach or local bus from Pathein to Nyaung U. Buses depart frequently throughout the day. Upon reaching Nyaung U, you can either walk or take a local taxi to Old Bagan, which is about 5 kilometers away. The fare for the bus will vary, typically costing around 5,000-10,000 MMK. Once in Old Bagan, follow the signs to Tharabar Gate.

  For a more convenient option, you can hire a taxi from anywhere in the Ayeyarwady Region directly to Tharabar Gate. This is the most straightforward method, especially if you are traveling in a group. The cost will depend on the distance, but expect to pay around 20,000-30,000 MMK from Nyaung U to Old Bagan. Make sure to agree on the fare before starting your journey.

• Bicycle

  If you’re feeling adventurous, consider renting a bicycle in Nyaung U and cycling to Old Bagan. The distance is approximately 5 kilometers and takes about 30 minutes. This is a great way to enjoy the scenic views of the area. Bicycles can typically be rented for around 1,000-3,000 MMK per day. Follow local roads and signs leading to Old Bagan, and you will arrive at Tharabar Gate.
