Car
If you are traveling by car, head towards the town of Lukla, which is the primary gateway to the Everest region. From Khumjung, drive to the nearest town with a road access, which is usually Namche Bazaar. The journey from Khumjung to Namche Bazaar will take about an hour. Once you arrive in Namche Bazaar, you cannot drive any further as the roads become trekking paths. You will have to park your vehicle and continue your journey on foot.
Public Transportation
For public transportation, take a bus or jeep from Kathmandu to Jiri or Lukla. The bus journey from Kathmandu to Jiri takes around 8-10 hours, while a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is about 30-40 minutes. From Jiri, you will need to trek for several days to reach Lukla. From Lukla, you can start your trek towards Everest Base Camp, which usually takes about 10-12 days, with stops in Namche Bazaar and other villages along the way.
Trekking
Once you reach Lukla, you will begin your trek to Everest Base Camp. The first major stop is Phakding, which is about a 3-4 hour trek from Lukla. From Phakding, you will continue to Namche Bazaar, which takes approximately 5-6 hours. After acclimatizing in Namche, you can proceed to Tengboche, Dingboche, and finally to Gorak Shep, the last stop before reaching Everest Base Camp. The total trek from Lukla to Everest Base Camp will take around 8-10 days, depending on your pace and acclimatization.
Costs
Expect to pay for various transportation costs: bus fare from Kathmandu to Jiri or Lukla ranges from $10 to $50, depending on the service. If you fly, a one-way ticket to Lukla can cost between $100 and $200. Additionally, you should budget for trekking permits, which are around $30, as well as accommodation and food costs during your trek. Hiring a guide or porter can also add to your expenses, typically ranging from $25 to $50 per day.
