Car
If you are driving, start from the main town of Motueka. Head south on State Highway 60 towards Abel Tasman National Park. Follow the signs for Abel Tasman National Park and continue until you reach the park entrance. Once inside the park, park your car at the Marahau car park. There is a parking fee of approximately NZD 10 per day, so be sure to have cash or a card ready.

Water Taxi
From Marahau, take a water taxi service to Tonga Island. Various operators, such as Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle or AquaTaxi, offer regular trips to Tonga Island. The boat ride typically takes about 20-30 minutes. Expect to pay around NZD 50-70 for a one-way ticket. Make sure to check the schedules in advance as they can vary, especially during the off-peak season.

Hiking
If you prefer to hike, you can walk the Abel Tasman Coastal Track from Marahau to Tonga Island. The hike is about 14 kilometers and will take approximately 4-5 hours one way. The trail is well-marked and offers stunning views of the coastline. Be sure to bring water, snacks, and a map of the area. Note that there is no cost to hike, but you should be prepared for the physical exertion required.

Public Transportation
If you are using public transportation, take a bus from Nelson to Motueka. InterCity and Nelson Airporter provide services to Motueka. Once in Motueka, follow the directions for car travel or use a taxi service to reach Marahau. From Marahau, you will need to take a water taxi or hike to Tonga Island.
