If you are traveling by car, start from Christchurch, the largest city in Canterbury. Head southwest on State Highway 73 (SH73) towards Darfield. Continue on SH73 for approximately 45 kilometers until you reach the town of Springfield. From Springfield, take the turn onto the Rakaia Gorge Road, which is well signposted. Follow this road for about 20 kilometers until you reach the Rakaia Gorge. Once you arrive at the gorge, look for the access road leading toward the Basins Hut area, which is about a 10-kilometer drive from the gorge. Note that the last section of the road may be unsealed, so drive carefully. Parking is available near Basins Hut, but ensure you check for any parking fees or regulations beforehand.

Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, start at Christchurch's central bus station. Take a bus to Springfield, which typically runs several times a day. Once you arrive in Springfield, you may need to arrange for a taxi or a shuttle service to take you to the Rakaia Gorge area, as public transport options are limited. Make sure to book your taxi in advance, as it may take some time to find a driver willing to take you to the more remote location of Basins Hut. Once you reach the gorge, follow the same unsealed road mentioned above to Basins Hut.
