Car
If you're starting from Napier, take State Highway 2 (SH2) heading northwest. After approximately 40 kilometers, turn left onto Te Haroto Road. Continue on this road until you reach the junction with State Highway 5 (SH5). Turn right onto SH5 and follow the signs for Taupo. After about 18 kilometers, turn left onto Waikare Road. Follow Waikare Road for about 17 kilometers until you reach Lake Waikareiti. There is no direct access to the lake, and you will need to park at the end of the road and walk approximately 1.5 kilometers along a walking track to get to the lake. Make sure to check if any parking fees apply.

Public Transportation
Take a bus from Napier to Taupo via the InterCity bus service. Once you arrive in Taupo, you will need to hire a car or take a taxi to reach Lake Waikareiti. From Taupo, follow the same route as mentioned for car travel: head towards SH5 and then turn onto Waikare Road. Note that public transport options directly to the lake are limited, so hiring a vehicle is recommended for the final leg of your journey.

Upon arriving at the parking area at the end of Waikare Road, you will need to walk approximately 1.5 kilometers along a well-marked walking track to reach Lake Waikareiti.
