Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from New Plymouth, take State Highway 3 south towards Hawera. After approximately 24 km, turn onto Egmont Road, which leads you directly to the Egmont National Park entrance. Continue on Egmont Road for about 10 km until you reach the North Egmont Visitor Centre. From the Visitor Centre, follow the Pouakai Circuit track, which is well-marked. The hike to Pouakai Hut is about 7.5 km and will take about 3-4 hours, depending on your fitness level. Ensure you have a map or GPS as the trail can be rugged.

• Public Transportation

  Take a bus from New Plymouth to the North Egmont Visitor Centre. Bus services may not run frequently, so check the local bus schedules in advance. Once you arrive at the Visitor Centre, follow the Pouakai Circuit track. The hike to Pouakai Hut is approximately 7.5 km and will take about 3-4 hours. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear and carry enough supplies for the trek.

• Hiking

  Upon reaching the North Egmont Visitor Centre, you can start your hike towards Pouakai Hut by following the Pouakai Circuit track. The trail is well-marked but may include steep sections and variable weather conditions, so be prepared with suitable gear and supplies. The hike is about 7.5 km, taking around 3-4 hours to complete. Note that there are no additional costs for using the track, but ensure you have a map and water.
