Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey by heading toward the town of Chivay, which is the nearest major town to Colca Canyon. From Apurímac, you will want to take the route through Arequipa. Drive on the Pan-American Highway (Route 1) south until you reach Arequipa. From Arequipa, take Route 34 south to Chivay. The entire drive is approximately 6 hours. Once in Chivay, follow the signs toward Colca Canyon. There is a toll booth at the entrance to the canyon area, so be prepared to pay a small fee (around 20 soles) to enter.
Public Transportation
For public transportation, begin your journey by taking a bus from Apurímac to Arequipa. The bus ride will take roughly 8-10 hours. Once you arrive in Arequipa, head to the terminal and catch a bus to Chivay. This leg of the trip will take about 4 hours. Buses from Arequipa to Chivay typically cost between 30-50 soles. After arriving in Chivay, you can either walk to the Colca Canyon entrance (about 30 minutes) or hire a taxi for about 10 soles. Again, there is a toll fee of approximately 20 soles to enter the canyon area.
