Car
From the North Coast of Peru, you will first need to drive to the city of Cusco. The most common route is via the Pan-American Highway (Route 1) and then take Route 3S towards Cusco. The journey can take approximately 20-24 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Upon reaching Cusco, park your car in a secure area as driving in the city can be challenging due to narrow streets. Next, take a taxi or public transport to the San Pedro train station.
Public Transportation
Use long-distance bus services such as Cruz del Sur or Oltursa from various cities on the North Coast to reach Cusco. The bus journey typically lasts around 18-24 hours. Once in Cusco, head to the San Pedro train station either by taxi or local bus. Purchase a train ticket to Aguas Calientes, the nearest town to Machu Picchu. The train ride lasts about 3-4 hours and offers stunning views of the Sacred Valley.
Train
Once you arrive at Aguas Calientes, you can either walk to Machu Picchu (approximately 1.5 hours uphill) or take a bus from the town to the entrance of the site. The bus ride takes about 30 minutes and costs around $12 USD one way. If you choose to walk, ensure you have adequate clothing and water.
Entrance Fee
Don't forget to purchase your entrance ticket to Machu Picchu in advance. Prices can vary, but typically range from $40-70 USD per person depending on whether you choose a guided tour or self-guided entry.
