Getting There

Car
If you're driving, start from any location in Sacred Valley, and head towards Urubamba. From Urubamba, take the route towards Ollantaytambo. The drive is approximately 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. Once in Ollantaytambo, follow the signs for the Inca Trail which leads you to the train station. Note that you will need to purchase a train ticket to Aguas Calientes, which is the closest town to Machu Picchu. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the train station.

Public Transportation (Bus)
To reach the Inca Trail using public transportation, first take a colectivo (shared taxi) from your location in Sacred Valley to Urubamba. Colectivos are available from various towns. The fare is usually around 10-15 soles per person. Once in Urubamba, transfer to another colectivo heading to Ollantaytambo. This leg of the journey costs about 5 soles. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, you will find the train station where you must buy a ticket to Aguas Calientes. The cost of the train ticket varies, but expect to pay around 60-80 soles for a one-way trip.

Train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes
After reaching Ollantaytambo by car or public transport, go to the train station. Purchase your train ticket to Aguas Calientes. The train journey takes approximately 1.5 hours, and it will take you directly to Aguas Calientes, which is the gateway to the Inca Trail. Be sure to check the train schedule in advance as services may vary throughout the day.

Hiking
Once in Aguas Calientes, you can either hike or take a bus up to Machu Picchu. If you choose to hike, be prepared for a steep and challenging walk that takes about 1.5-2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus which costs around 24 soles for a round trip and takes about 30 minutes. Be sure to have your Inca Trail pass ready, as it's required for access.
