Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the nearest town of Hațeg. From Hațeg, take the DN66 road towards Petroșani. After approximately 15 km, turn onto the DJ664 road towards Retezat National Park. Drive until you reach the Retezat National Park entrance at the Poiana Pelegii area. Park your car in the designated parking area where you may have to pay a small fee (around 10 RON per day). From here, the trailhead to Lacul Bucura is clearly marked.

For those using public transportation, take a train or a bus to Hațeg. From Hațeg, you need to catch a local bus to Retezat National Park. Ensure to check the local bus schedule, as the frequency may vary. Once you arrive at the Poiana Pelegii stop, you will need to walk to the parking area and begin your hike. Note that the bus fare is typically around 15-20 RON.

Hiking
From the Poiana Pelegii parking area, follow the marked trail towards Lacul Bucura. The hike is approximately 3 hours long (about 10 km) and is moderately challenging. It's recommended to wear good hiking shoes and carry sufficient water and snacks. Follow the blue triangle trail markers for guidance as you make your way to one of the largest glacial lakes in Romania.
