History of Punggol

Punggol, derived from the Malay word 'Ponggol' which means 'hurling sticks at the branches of fruit trees to bring them down to the ground,' was once a rural village. Early settlers, primarily Malays, engaged in fishing and farming, cultivating crops like rubber and fruit orchards. The area was also home to several kampungs (villages), which played a significant role in the local community.
During World War II, Punggol was the site of significant historical events. The area witnessed a tragic episode known as the Punggol Beach Massacre. On 28 February 1942, during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, 400 Chinese civilians were executed at Punggol Beach. This event is part of the larger Sook Ching Massacre, where thousands of Chinese suspected of being anti-Japanese were systematically killed.
Following World War II, Punggol remained predominantly a farming and fishing village. However, the area began to see gradual changes as Singapore embarked on modernization efforts.
