Yishun, formerly known as Nee Soon, derives its name from Lim Nee Soon, a prominent businessman in the early 20th century who played a significant role in the rubber and pineapple industries in Singapore. The area was primarily agricultural, with vast plantations and small villages dotting the landscape.

During World War II, Yishun, like the rest of Singapore, came under Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945. The region witnessed significant military activity, and its residents endured hardships such as forced labor and food shortages.
