History of Nugal

Pastoral societies and the Nugaal Valley

For centuries, the Nugaal Valley and surrounding plains have supported mobile pastoral communities whose livelihoods depend on camels, goats, sheep and cattle, with movement shaped by seasonal rain and access to wells. The valley was not a single centralised kingdom but part of a wider Somali social and trading world organised through kinship, customary law, Islamic learning and oral tradition. This pastoral geography remains visible in the distribution of settlements, livestock markets and water points across the region.

Indian Ocean trade and Eyl’s maritime past

Eyl, on the Nugal coast, formed part of the long-distance maritime environment linking Somalia with the Arabian Peninsula and the wider Indian Ocean. Coastal communities exchanged livestock, hides, fish and other goods through networks that changed over time as political authority and shipping patterns shifted. The town’s position also made it strategically important during periods of rivalry among local powers and external interests. Its coastal setting is a reminder that Nugal’s history has never been solely inland or pastoral.

The Majeerteen Sultanate and regional authority

During the nineteenth century, the Majeerteen Sultanate became an important political force in north-eastern Somalia, with influence extending across parts of the territory now associated with Puntland. Authority was exercised through alliances, tribute, trade and control of coastal and inland routes rather than through uniform administration across every settlement. Nugal became part of a political landscape in which pastoral leaders, coastal merchants, Islamic authorities and regional rulers negotiated power and access to resources.

Colonial rule and the Italian Somaliland period

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, European imperial competition transformed Somali political geography. The territory that includes modern Nugal was incorporated into Italian Somaliland, although colonial control was uneven outside administrative centres and main routes. Italian rule introduced new systems of taxation, administration and mapping while leaving much pastoral life lightly governed. Colonial boundaries later influenced the political structure inherited by the Somali Republic, despite their limited correspondence with older social and trading networks.

Independence, state formation and civil war

Somalia became independent in 1960 through the union of former British and Italian territories. Nugal was subsequently administered within the Somali state, but military rule, regional inequality and the collapse of central government in 1991 profoundly altered political life. Roads, public institutions and commercial links were disrupted, while local authorities and community networks assumed greater responsibility for security and services. Puntland’s formation in 1998

Puntland was established in 1998 as an autonomous administration in north-eastern Somalia, rather than as a declaration of complete independence.
