Walking
Start from the center of Custer, perhaps near the Custer County Courthouse. Head south on 5th Street until you reach the intersection with Mount Rushmore Road (US-16). Cross over to the east side of the road and continue walking south. After about 0.5 miles, you will see the entrance to the Black Hills National Forest. Follow the signs into the forest area. Make sure to have water and comfortable walking shoes, as you may explore several trails once you enter.

If you have a bicycle, start at the Custer County Courthouse and head south on 5th Street. Turn left onto Mount Rushmore Road (US-16) and cycle approximately 1 mile.
