History of Ascona

Early Settlements on Lake Maggiore

The Ascona area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as archaeological evidence from the surrounding region indicates. Its position beside Lake Maggiore offered access to water, fertile terraces and routes through the valleys leading towards the Alps. The ancient settlement at nearby San Materno is particularly important for understanding the locality’s early development, with archaeological remains documenting occupation across several periods.
