Getting There

• Train

  If you are currently in Locarno, head to the Locarno train station (Stazione di Locarno). From there, take a train heading towards Colico. The train ride will take approximately 50 minutes. Once you arrive at Colico station, exit the station and head towards the lake. Follow the signs for 'Forte Montecchio Nord' which is about a 20-minute walk from the station. You will walk along the lakeside promenade until you reach Via alle Torri. Turn left onto Via alle Torri and follow it until you reach Forte Montecchio Nord.

• Bus

  From Locarno, you can also take a bus to Colico. Head to the Locarno bus station (Autostazione di Locarno) and look for the bus that goes to Colico. The bus ride will take about an hour. Once you reach Colico, get off at the bus stop nearest to the lake. From there, head towards the lake and follow the same path as mentioned for the train. Walk along the lakeside promenade, turn left onto Via alle Torri, and continue until you arrive at Forte Montecchio Nord.

• Bicycle

  For the more adventurous, you can rent a bicycle in Locarno and cycle to Colico. Start at the lakeside promenade in Locarno and follow the cycling paths along Lake Maggiore towards Colico. The distance is approximately 30 kilometers, and it will take you about 2 hours to reach Forte Montecchio Nord. Once you arrive in Colico, follow the signs to Via alle Torri, and you will find the fortress.

• Walking

  If you prefer to explore on foot, you can walk from Locarno to Colico, though it will take a considerable amount of time (roughly 6-8 hours). Start at the lakeside promenade in Locarno and follow the scenic route along the lake towards Colico. Once you arrive in Colico, make your way to Via alle Torri by following the signs for Forte Montecchio Nord. This option is best for those who enjoy a long hike and want to take in the beautiful scenery.
