From Johnson City, you'll want to start at the Johnson City Transit Center located at 137 W Main St, Johnson City, TN 37604. Check the local bus schedule and board the Route 1 (Bristol) bus. Ride the bus until you reach the stop at the intersection of W State of Franklin Rd and N Roan St. This stop is a key transfer point. Here, you will transfer to the Route 3 (Piney Flats) bus. Stay on the Route 3 bus until you reach the stop at Hyder Hill Rd. From this stop, it is about a 0.5-mile walk to the Rocky Mount State Historic Site. Head northeast on Hyder Hill Rd, and you will see the site on your left at 200 Hyder Hill Rd, Piney Flats, TN 37686.

If you prefer to cycle, start in downtown Johnson City and head southeast on W Walnut St toward S Roan St. Continue until you reach S Roan St and turn right. Follow S Roan St until you reach the intersection with W State of Franklin Rd, then continue straight onto the Greenbelt Trail that runs alongside the creek. This trail will lead you out of Johnson City and toward Piney Flats. Follow the trail until you see signs for Hyder Hill Rd. Turn right on Hyder Hill Rd and continue cycling until you reach Rocky Mount State Historic Site at 200 Hyder Hill Rd, Piney Flats, TN 37686. The total distance from downtown Johnson City is approximately 10 miles.

For those who enjoy walking, you can start from downtown Johnson City. Begin at Founders Park and head south on S Roan St. Continue straight until you reach W State of Franklin Rd and turn left. Walk along W State of Franklin Rd, which will eventually lead you toward the outskirts of Johnson City. At the intersection with N Roan St, continue straight onto the Greenbelt Trail. Follow the trail all the way out to Piney Flats. Once you reach the intersection with Hyder Hill Rd, turn left and walk until you reach Rocky Mount State Historic Site at 200 Hyder Hill Rd, Piney Flats, TN 37686. This walk is approximately 10 miles and may take several hours, so be prepared with water and comfortable shoes.
