Getting There

    If you're driving from the Big Bend National Park Visitor Center, head southwest on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. Continue on this road for approximately 22 miles. As you approach the end of the drive, keep an eye out for the Santa Elena Canyon trailhead sign on your right. Turn right at the sign and follow the road until you reach the parking area for Santa Elena Canyon.

    Currently, there are limited public transportation options directly to Santa Elena Canyon from other points in Big Bend National Park. If you're using the park shuttle service, you can take the shuttle to the Castolon area and then walk approximately 1.5 miles west along the scenic road to reach the Santa Elena Canyon trailhead. Be sure to check the shuttle schedule in advance, as it may not run frequently.

    If you're already at the end of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, you can hike from there. The Santa Elena Canyon trail begins at the parking area.
