History of Ivano-Frankivsk

Ivano-Frankivsk, originally named Stanisławów, was founded in 1662 by the Polish nobleman Andrzej Potocki. It was named in honor of his father, Stanisław 'Rewera' Potocki. The town quickly grew as a private fortress and a center of trade and crafts, attracting settlers from diverse ethnic backgrounds including Poles, Armenians, Jews, and Ukrainians.
Following the first partition of Poland in 1772, Stanisławów came under Austrian rule and was incorporated into the Habsburg Empire. The city's strategic location led to its development as an important administrative and military center. During this period, significant infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and railways were established, enhancing the city's economic and social landscape.
After World War I and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Stanisławów became part of the newly reconstituted Polish state. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ivano-Frankivsk became part of independent Ukraine. The city has since experienced a cultural renaissance and economic transformation.
