Ivano-Frankivsk, originally named Stanisławów, was founded in 1662 by the Polish nobleman Andrzej Potocki. It was named in honor of his father, Stanisław 'Rewera' Potocki. The town quickly grew as a private fortress and a center of trade and crafts, attracting settlers from diverse ethnic backgrounds including Poles, Armenians, Jews, and Ukrainians.

Following the first partition of Poland in 1772, Stanisławów came under Austrian rule and was incorporated into the Habsburg Empire. During the Soviet era, the city was renamed Ivano-Frankivsk in 1962 to honor the Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko.
