Sevastopol was founded in 1783 by orders of Russian Empress Catherine the Great following the annexation of Crimea. The city was established as a strategic naval base and port and quickly became an important hub for the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

From 1853 to 1856, Sevastopol was a focal point during the Crimean War. The city's harbor and fortifications were the site of the infamous Siege of Sevastopol, where allied forces of the Ottoman Empire, France, Britain, and Sardinia laid siege to the city for 11 months. The defense of Sevastopol by the Russian forces became legendary, and the war significantly impacted European politics and military tactics.

During World War II, Sevastopol was again a site of intense military conflict. The Siege of Sevastopol in 1941-1942 saw the city endure a brutal siege by Axis forces. Despite fierce resistance, the city fell to the Germans in July 1942, only to be retaken by Soviet forces in May 1944. The city's heroic defense earned it the title of Hero City in 1945.

After World War II, Sevastopol underwent extensive reconstruction. As part of the Soviet Union, it continued to serve as a crucial naval base for the Black Sea Fleet. The city's infrastructure and cultural landmarks were rebuilt, contributing to its historical and strategic significance during the Cold War.

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Sevastopol became part of the newly independent Ukraine.
