Amhuinnsuidhe Castle was constructed between 1864 and 1867 in the distinctive Scottish Baronial style by architect David Bryce. Originally named Fincastle, it was built for Charles Murray, the 7th Earl of Dunmore, whose family had acquired the island in the early 19th century. The castle’s imposing four-storey main block features castellated battlements, a corner turret, rounded corners, and crowstepped gables, all crafted from imported freestone ashlar. Its setting is unusual for a country house, squeezed between the sea and a rising hill, with the main road running directly in front of it.
