Ogmore Castle’s origins trace back to around 1106, when William de Londres, one of the legendary Twelve Knights of Glamorgan, established a timber and earth fortification to secure Norman control westward in Wales. Positioned strategically on flat land by the River Ewenny and Ogmore, it guarded a key river ford and formed part of a defensive triangle with Coity and Newcastle Castles. This early ringwork was soon replaced by stone fortifications, including a rectangular keep built by William’s son Maurice in the 1120s, making it one of the oldest Norman keeps in South Wales.

Architectural Evolution and Defensive Features

The castle’s design evolved over the 12th and early 13th centuries, with stone curtain walls added around 1200 by Thomas de Londres, replacing timber palisades. A deep tidal ditch surrounds the inner ward, uniquely engineered to fill with seawater at high tide, enhancing defense. The surviving keep, though partially ruined, reveals irregular field stones, glacial pebbles, and limestone slabs bonded with brown mortar. Outer bailey remains include foundations of manorial buildings and a courthouse constructed in 1454, reflecting the castle’s later administrative role.

The castle suffered damage during the early 15th-century Owain Glyndŵr uprising but was repaired and maintained until around the 1440s.
