Getting There

  • Car

    From the Assateague Island National Seashore Visitor Center, head south on Assateague Island Access Road. Continue straight for about 5 miles until you reach the intersection with VA-175. Turn left onto VA-175 and follow it for approximately 12 miles. You will come to a roundabout; take the second exit onto Chincoteague Road (VA-179). Follow Chincoteague Road for about 4 miles. You will see signs for Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Continue straight until you reach the entrance at 8231 Beach Rd, Chincoteague, VA 23336. Note: There may be a parking fee to access the refuge, so be prepared with cash or a credit card.

  • Public Transportation

    If you are using public transportation, you will first need to take a bus to the nearest major town, which is Salisbury, MD. From there, take the Shore Transit bus service (Route 1) towards Ocean City, MD. Get off at the stop for Chincoteague Island. From the bus stop, you can either walk (about 1.5 miles) or use a rideshare service to get to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge at 8231 Beach Rd, Chincoteague, VA 23336. Please check the Shore Transit schedule ahead of time for bus times and potential costs.
