A Moving Barrier-Island Landscape

Assateague is a geological landscape rather than a fixed landform. Waves, currents, storms and wind continually reshape its dunes, beaches, marshes and inlets, while the island's position along the Atlantic edge of the Delmarva Peninsula has changed over long periods.
