Badrutt's Palace stands as a majestic emblem of St. Moritz, a place where history, luxury, and impeccable service converge to create an unforgettable experience. From its origins rooted in a daring winter bet to its modern-day status as a playground for the elite, the Palace continues to redefine hospitality in the Swiss Alps.

A Palace Born of a Winter Bet

The story of Badrutt's Palace begins with a visionary named Johannes Badrutt, a pioneer who, in 1864, made a bold wager that would forever change the landscape of St. Moritz. He promised English summer guests that if they returned in winter and didn't enjoy their stay, he would cover their travel expenses. They came, they were captivated by the winter wonderland, and thus, winter tourism in St. Moritz was born.

Inspired by his father's success, Caspar Badrutt, Johannes' son, embarked on an ambitious project to construct a hotel that would reflect the grandeur of the era. In 1896, the Palace Hotel opened its doors, a magnificent structure designed by the esteemed architects Chiodera and Tschudi. The hotel's neo-Gothic castle design evoked the romanticism of the 'Grand European Tour' era, a time when wealthy Europeans traveled the continent in search of culture and refinement. The hotel was originally named Palace Hotel, but later became known as Badrutt's Palace Hotel.

The Badrutt family's commitment to hospitality has been unwavering. For generations, they have continuously operated the hotel, adapting to changing times while preserving the Palace's unique character and charm. This dedication has solidified Badrutt's Palace as not just a hotel, but a legacy – a testament to the enduring power of family, vision, and a passion for creating exceptional experiences.

Le Grand Hall: The Living Room of St. Moritz

Le Grand Hall is more than just a lobby; it's the vibrant social heart of Badrutt's Palace and, arguably, of St. Moritz itself. This expansive space, often referred to as 'the living room of St. Moritz,' offers stunning panoramic views of the lake and mountains, creating an atmosphere of relaxed elegance. It's a place 'to see and be seen', where guests gather to soak in the ambiance and enjoy the company of fellow travelers.

Throughout the day, Le Grand Hall buzzes with activity. Afternoon tea is a cherished tradition, with guests indulging in delicate pastries and savory sandwiches while sipping on fragrant teas. As evening approaches, the atmosphere transforms as champagne corks pop and caviar is served, accompanied by the soothing sounds of live piano music. The hall is decorated with a mix of art, collected by the Badrutt family from their world travels.

Legend has it that Alfred Hitchcock, a frequent guest at Badrutt's Palace, conceived the idea for his iconic thriller 'The Birds' while relaxing in Le Grand Hall. Whether this tale is fact or folklore, it adds to the mystique of this remarkable space, a place where creativity and inspiration seem to flow as freely as the champagne.

The architecture of Le Grand Hall takes inspiration from the Renaissance Revival, showcasing well-judged proportions and symmetries to create a practical, elegant space. The Renaissance Revival borrows elements from the Gothic and Baroque styles, and features stained-glass windows and a coffered ceiling.
