In the heart of the Kingdom of Eswatini, nestled at the foot of a mountain resembling a basking crocodile, lies a place where discarded glass is reborn into stunning works of art.
Ngwenya Glass is more than just a factory; it's a testament to sustainability, community empowerment, and the transformative power of human creativity. A visit here offers a captivating glimpse into the world of glassblowing, a chance to support local artisans, and the opportunity to take home a piece of African artistry.

The story of Ngwenya Glass is as fascinating as the pieces they create. The factory's location is steeped in history, with the Ngwenya mountain itself resembling a crocodile and holding the world's most ancient iron ore mine at its summit. In 1979, a Swedish aid project established the factory, aiming to provide employment and training in the age-old art of glassblowing. Talented locals, including Sibusiso Mhlanga, were sent to Sweden to hone their skills under master glassblowers.
However, funding challenges led to the factory's closure in 1985. But the story didn't end there. In 1987, the Prettejohn family, captivated by a collection of glass elephants from Ngwenya, decided to revive the factory. Despite having no prior experience in glassblowing, they sought out former employees, including Sibusiso Mhlanga, and together, they breathed new life into Ngwenya Glass.
Today, Ngwenya Glass employs over 60 people, primarily from local villages, and is certified by the World Fair Trade Organisation. The factory is deeply committed to eco-friendly practices, using 100% recycled glass sourced from across Eswatini. Discarded soft drink bottles and other glass waste are collected, cleaned, and transformed into beautiful and functional objects. Even the furnace is fueled by purified old engine oil and cooking oil, further minimizing the factory's environmental impact.
Ngwenya Glass also actively supports wildlife conservation through the Ngwenya Glass Rhino and Elephant Fund, donating a percentage of sales to protect these endangered animals. This dedication to both environmental and social responsibility makes Ngwenya Glass a truly unique and inspiring destination.

One of the highlights of visiting Ngwenya Glass is witnessing the mesmerizing glassblowing process. From an overhead balcony, visitors can observe skilled artisans transforming recycled glass into stunning creations. The air crackles with the intense heat of the furnaces, and the rhythmic sounds of blowers and shaping tools fill the factory.
The process begins with the careful selection and preparation of recycled glass. The glass is then melted in the furnace at temperatures reaching approximately 800 degrees Celsius. The molten glass is gathered on the end of a blowpipe, and the glassblower skillfully shapes it by blowing air into the pipe while simultaneously manipulating the molten material with tools.
It's a dance of precision and artistry, as the glassblower coaxes the molten glass into its desired form. The range of glassware produced is impressive, from delicate animal figurines to elegant tableware, vases, and jugs. Each piece is unique, reflecting the individual artistry of the glassblower and the inherent variations in the recycled glass. The finished products showcase a blend of traditional techniques and contemporary design, resulting in pieces that are both beautiful and functional.
The perimeter walkway is only open on weekdays, as the artisans are not at work over the weekends.

After witnessing the magic of the glassblowing process, a visit to the Ngwenya Glass showroom is a must. Here, you'll find a wide array of signature works available for purchase, each piece telling a story of sustainability and craftsmanship. From the iconic glass elephants that sparked the factory's revival to whisky tumblers and wine glasses, there's a treasure to suit every taste and budget.
The showroom provides an opportunity to acquire unique, handcrafted souvenirs and gifts, knowing that your purchase supports local artisans and environmental conservation. While browsing, keep an eye out for special offers or wholesale prices, allowing you to bring home even more of these exquisite creations.
Hidden Gem: For a sweet treat, don't miss the chocolate shop within the complex. Indulge in locally made chocolates, crafted with the same care and attention to detail as the glassware. The Ngwenya Glass Complex also houses other artisan outlets, including Baobab Batik, Gone Rural, and Swazi Candles, offering a diverse range of handcrafted goods.

A short distance from Ngwenya Glass lies the Swazi Candles Craft Market, another must-visit destination for craft lovers. This vibrant market offers a unique shopping experience, showcasing the artistry of local candle makers and other artisans.
At Swazi Candles, you can witness the candle-making process firsthand, observing the intricate 'millefiore' technique, where layers of colored wax are combined to create stunning patterns. The candles are designed to melt only on the inside, creating a translucent stained-glass effect that enhances the luminous colors.
In addition to candles, the craft market features a variety of other handmade goods, including soaps, clothing from Ubuntu Creations, and jewelry from Quazi Design. The Sambane Tea Garden provides a relaxing spot to enjoy a meal or snack, while a playground keeps children entertained. The Swazi Candles Craft Market embodies the vibrant spirit of Eswatini's artistic community.
