When you exit the Colosseum you will head for the Arch of Constantine and the Roman Forum. The Forum was the centre of commercial, political and religious life in ancient Roman times and there are some magnificent ruins that surround this vast square. You will see the remains of the 1st-century Arch of Titus, the House of the Vestal Virgins, the Temple of Saturn, the Senate House, and the white marble Arch of Septimius Severus.
Colle Capitolino
Next stop is Il Vittoriano, situated on the Capitoline Hill and only a short walk from the Forum via the Via Sacra (Sacred Way). It is one of Italy’s modern-day iconic monuments, executed in the neoclassical style in stunning white marble. You then meander through the streets of Rome to the Trevi Fountain, known the world over for its part in Fellini’s La Dolce Vita. Follow the age-old legend, throw a coin in the fountain, make a wish, and you will one day return to Rome! Next it is time for a lunch break (own expense). There are lots of places to choose from, whether you want a pizza, sandwich or 3-course meal – ask your guide for recommendations. After lunch the tour takes you to the Government District to see the Parliament Building, the Palace of the Council of Ministers and the Column of Marcus Aurelius. In close proximity is the impressive Temple of Hadrian; built by order of Antonius Pius to commemorate is predecessor. A meander through the narrow streets brings you to the Pantheon where the famous Renaissance painter and Architect Raphael is entombed. Then, you pass by the ancients Baths of Nero to Piazza Navona where you will see Bernini’s magnificent “Fountain of the Rivers”. For the final part of the tour you cross the Tiber to the smallest country in the world, the Vatican City. You will visit the Vatican Museums with its treasure trove of artworks including frescoes by Raphael and you will also visit the breathtaking Sistine Chapel to see Michelangelo’s famous ceiling. It is then in to St. Peter’s Basilica with its magnificent dome. Your guide will leave you in St. Peter’s Square where you can see the Papal Palace. Then, you pass by the ancients Baths of Nero to Piazza Navona where you will see Bernini’s magnificent “Fountain of the Four Rivers”.
Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi
It was designed in 1651 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini for Pope Innocent X. The base of the fountain is a basin from the centre of which travertine rocks rise to support four river gods and above them, a copy of an Egyptian obelisk surmounted with the Pamphili family emblem of a dove with an olive twig.

It is then time for a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica where you will explore the numerous side chapels with their hidden crypts. You will see Michelangelo’s Pietà and your guide will explain why this is the only work that he signed. You will gain an appreciation of the mastery that went into the creation of Bernini’s altarpiece and learn how Michelangelo triumphed over his contemporaries for the honour to paint St. Peter’s magnificent dome.
