What to expect
The Colosseum is the largest ancient amphitheater ever built and is still the largest permanent amphitheater in the world. Construction began in 72 AD. and was completed in 80 AD. under his successor and heir, Tito The Colosseum is built of travertine limestone, tuff volcanic rock and exposed concrete. It could hold an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators at various times in its history, and was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles including animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles and dramas based on Roman mythology, and short naval battles. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval period.
The Roman Forum was the center of daily life in Rome for centuries. It was the place of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials and gladiatorial matches; and the core of commercial affairs. The teeming heart of ancient Rome, it has been defined as the most famous meeting place in the world and in all of history. The Forum today is a sprawling ruin of architectural fragments and intermittent archaeological excavations that attracts more than 4.5 million visitors each year.
Palatine Hill: The seven hills of Rome are the most central, it is one of the oldest parts of the city and has been called "the first nucleus of the Roman Empire. The site is today mainly a large open-air museum while the Palatine Museum houses many finds from excavations here and from other ancient Italian sites.
