Discover more about Capitol Historic Building Tour

Located atop Capitol Hill in Montgomery, the Alabama State Capitol is more than just a building; it's a living museum of state history and politics. Completed in 1851 in the Greek Revival style, it replaced an earlier structure that was destroyed by fire. The Capitol has witnessed pivotal moments in history, serving as the birthplace of the Confederate States of America in 1861. Over a century later, it was the final destination of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March in 1965, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. The building's architecture is a sight to behold, and the grounds feature monuments, statues, and gardens across five acres. Inside, visitors can explore the entry stairhall, the old Governor's Office, the old State Supreme Court, the old Supreme Court Library, the rotunda, the old House of Representatives, and the old Senate Chamber. The Senate Chamber has been restored to its 1861 appearance, complete with a trompe l'oeil ceiling. Eight murals in the Rotunda depict significant episodes from Alabama's history. The Alabama Historical Commission maintains the buildings and grounds and continues to restore and enhance the historical character of the building. Today, the Capitol houses the Governor's office and other executive branch officers.
