Alabama Department of Archives and History: Preserving Alabama's Story

The Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) stands as a guardian of Alabama's rich and complex past. Established in 1901, it holds the distinction of being the first state-funded, independent archival agency in the United States. Its mission is to identify, preserve, and make accessible the records and artifacts that tell the story of Alabama and its people. The ADAH is home to the Museum of Alabama, which features exhibits exploring the state's history from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum's centerpiece exhibit, Alabama Voices, showcases over 800 artifacts and hundreds of images and documents, covering topics such as struggles over the land, the rise of the cotton economy, the Civil War, industrialization, the Civil Rights Movement, and the space race. Other exhibits explore the state's geography, geology, and biodiversity. The ADAH also offers a variety of resources for researchers, including an extensive collection of original documents, photographs, maps, and other materials. The Archives Research Room is open to the public and provides access to online databases, microfilm printers, and other research tools. The ADAH's website also offers a wealth of digital resources, including digitized collections, electronic records, and databases. In addition to its exhibits and research resources, the ADAH provides educational programs for students and adults. Guided tours are available for groups, and the ADAH also hosts lectures, workshops, and other events throughout the year. As the ADAH approaches its 125th anniversary in 2026, it is expanding and enhancing several of its Museum of Alabama exhibits. These improvements include a new Children's Gallery and updates to the Alabama Voices exhibit.
