Discover more about Governor's Mansion

The Alabama Governor's Mansion, a stately presence in Montgomery's Garden District, has been the official residence of the state's governors since 1951. Designed in the Neoclassical Revival style by architect Weatherly Carter, the mansion was originally built in 1907 for Robert Fulwood Ligon, Jr., of one of Montgomery's most prominent families. For over four decades, the Ligons hosted numerous family events and social gatherings within its walls. In 1950, the state acquired the mansion for $100,000, allocating an additional $130,000 for renovations and furnishings. Governor Gordon Persons and his family were the first to occupy the mansion in 1951. Since then, numerous first families have called the mansion home, each leaving their mark on its history. The Reception Hall welcomes visitors with its grand staircase, elaborate woodwork, and oak floors with cherry and mahogany banding. A French crystal chandelier, originally from the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans, adds a touch of glamour. The Dining Room features a mahogany table and chairs commissioned in 1959, along with a Czechoslovakian crystal chandelier purchased in 1974. Tours are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, showcasing the main floor and grounds. The Holiday Candlelight Tours in December are a popular event.
