The Shorter Mansion, located in the heart of Eufaula, Alabama, is a testament to the opulence and history of the Old South. Originally built in 1884 by Eli Sims Shorter II and his wife, Wileyna Lamar Shorter, the house underwent extensive renovations between 1901 and 1906, transforming it into the stunning Classical Revival mansion that stands today. The mansion is named to the National Register of Historic Places.The mansion features 17 free-standing Corinthian columns. Inside, visitors can explore rooms meticulously furnished with period pieces, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Shorter family and their contemporaries. The Eufaula Historical Museum is housed within the mansion, showcasing artifacts and exhibits that delve into Eufaula's past. Portraits of six Barbour County natives who served as Alabama governors, as well as memorabilia of Admiral Thomas M. Moorer, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are also on display.The Shorter Mansion plays a central role in preserving the history of the area. In 1965, the Eufaula Heritage Association acquired the mansion, marking the beginning of the preservation movement in Eufaula. Today, the mansion serves as the association's headquarters and hosts the Eufaula Pilgrimage, Alabama's oldest tour of homes. The venue is also available for weddings, teas, meetings, and other events.
