Located just outside Mesopotam village, the Monastery of Saint Nicholas stands as a remarkable example of Byzantine architecture in southern Albania. The monastery, also known as St. Koll's Orthodox Church, dates back to the 13th century and is believed to have been built in 1224 or 1225. It was constructed on the site of an earlier Orthodox monastery complex, incorporating stones from a Hellenic temple dating back to the 3rd-4th centuries BC. One of the monastery's most distinctive features is its double apse, a rare architectural element suggesting the potential use by both Catholic and Orthodox religious rites. The exterior is built with large limestone blocks, adorned with carvings of animals and mythical creatures, including a lion, eagle, and dragons. Inside, remnants of frescoes depicting saints and biblical scenes offer a glimpse into the religious art of medieval Albania. Surrounded by the partially preserved ruins of a circular wall with rectangular towers, the monastery evokes a sense of history and serenity. Despite some damage from earthquakes and age, the site remains a spiritual hub, hosting annual gatherings and celebrations. The monastery's connection to the ancient city of Phoenice (modern Finiq), located nearby, adds to its historical significance.
