Discover more about Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana, located on Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit, stands as a powerful symbol of Albania's tumultuous past and its aspirations for the future. Originally constructed in 1988 as a museum dedicated to Enver Hoxha, the long-time leader of Communist Albania, the building was co-designed by Hoxha's daughter Pranvera Hoxha and her husband Klement Kolaneci, along with Pirro Vaso and Vladimir Bregu. At the time, it was the most expensive structure ever built in Albania. Following the collapse of communism in 1991, the Pyramid shed its original function and was repurposed several times, serving as a conference center, exhibition venue, and even a base for NATO during the Kosovo War in 1999. For a time, the Pyramid was left in disrepair, leading to debates about its demolition. However, a majority of citizens opposed this, leading to its refurbishment. In May 2023, the Pyramid was reopened after a significant renovation by MVRDV, transforming it into a youth IT center called TUMO Tirana. The renovated structure includes staircases on its sides, allowing visitors to climb to the top and enjoy panoramic city views. The interior features colorful boxes housing cafes, studios, workshops, and classrooms, providing free technology education to Albanian youth. Today, the Pyramid stands as a monument to the nation's ability to adapt and overcome its past, offering a unique space for learning, entertainment, and cultural engagement.
