Discover more about Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana, located on Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit, stands as a powerful symbol of Albania's complex and ever-evolving history. Originally constructed in 1988 as a museum dedicated to the former communist leader Enver Hoxha, the building was designed by a team including Hoxha's daughter and son-in-law. The structure's design was inspired by Mayan and Egyptian pyramids. Following the collapse of communism in 1991, the Pyramid shed its original purpose and went through several transformations, serving as a conference center, exhibition venue, and even a base for NATO during the Kosovo War. For a time, it was left in disrepair, becoming a canvas for graffiti and a subject of debate regarding its future. Some wanted it demolished as a reminder of a difficult past, while others saw it as a unique architectural landmark worth preserving. In 2018, a project was unveiled to transform the Pyramid into a youth IT center called TUMO Tirana, focusing on technology, computer programming, robotics, and startups. The renovation, completed in May 2023 by MVRDV, has turned the Pyramid into an "open sculpture" with colorful boxes housing cafes, studios, workshops, and classrooms. Staircases now line the sloping sides, allowing visitors to climb to the top and enjoy panoramic views of the city. Today, the Pyramid of Tirana is a dynamic space that blends history with innovation, offering free educational opportunities and serving as a gathering place for the community.
